Cedar American Little League Player/Parent FAQ
When does registration open and how much does it cost?
Player and coach registration will typically begin sometime in late January and is done online on
this website. Currently, the cost to register for the season is $75, which includes a player jersey and
hat.
When does the season start and run until?
The Little League season starts at the “tryout”, which is typically held in early March at the Diamond Z
indoor arena (for weather purposes). Teams are selected soon after, followed by practices, with the
game schedule typically running after spring break in early to mid-April until late May/early June. For
those kids that are selected to All Star teams, the season goes even longer into the summer depending
on how many games they win.
What happens at tryouts? Does everyone make a team?
Tryouts is the term used, but it’s not actually a tryout. Every player will get to be on a team. It is an
opportunity for every player to have his/her skills assessed so coaches can evaluate the players for the
player draft. Players will be led through a small sequence of activities so their ability can be evaluated.
This typically involves some sequence of basic hitting, fielding, and throwing.
How often do teams play games and practice? What days of the week?
Teams will typically play 1-2 games per week on Monday through Thursday. Practice times and
amounts will vary based on each team and each coach’s schedule, but during the season, most teams
will try to practice at least once per week in addition to the game schedule.
What time are the games?
Game times vary slightly depending on baseball or softball and age division, but typically they
start either late afternoon after school, or in the early evening.
Is there a post-season tournament?
Yes. Following the conclusion of the regular season schedule, all of the teams will be seeded for a single
elimination tournament to determine the league champion.
What is the difference between Minors, Majors and Juniors?
Minors are for kids ages 9-10, but many 8 year olds also play. Majors are for kids ages 11-12. Juniors are
for kids ages 13-14. Only Majors and Juniors are eligible to advance to the Little League World Series.
What can you tell me about the All-Stars?
Following the season, coaches from each league will select an all-star team. The Minors teams will play
in a single postseason tournament made up of other all-star teams from the region, including the Cedar
National Minors All Star teams. The Majors and Juniors All Star teams will compete in similar regional
tournaments, but the winners of those tournaments can advance to play in San Bernadino, CA, with the
opportunity to advance to the Little League World Series events such as the one in Williamsport, PA.
What are the Opening and Closing Ceremonies?
Cedar National Little League hosts the Opening Ceremonies for its teams and parents, while the Cedar
American Little League hosts Closing Ceremonies. Cedar American players are not expected to attend
the Opening Ceremonies, but are welcome and invited to attend the Closing Ceremonies. At the Closing
Ceremonies, all of the teams are recognized, prizes are raffled, and good times are had by all! This date
varies each season, but is held at some point late in the season at a date TBA.
I’m considering coaching a team. What information should I know?
Coaching a Little League team is both rewarding and fun, and the leagues could always use quality and
motivated coaches. While prior baseball experience is a plus, it is not a requirement. The most
important things are to have a willingness to put in the time, be good with kids, and to focus on the most
important things such as fun and player development. The time commitment runs from early March
through early June, with the season running from early/mid April to late May/early June. Games are
held 1-2 times per week, and practices can be scheduled around games, with the goal of at least one
extra practice per week outside of games. Coaches will assess all of the players at the tryouts and then a
player draft is held after the tryouts. Your child will be on your team and you can have an assistant coach,
as well.
